Before You Go: 6 Essential Steps to Take Before Your Beach Camping Trip
So you’re planning a beach camping trip. You can already taste the salt in the air and feel the warm air rolling off the water. Setting up camp on the beach is an amazing way to get the most out of your summer. You’ll be totally immersed in the natural beauty of the coast. Plus, you won’t have to pay for a hotel!
Whether you’re camping in a tent or staying in your RV, your beach camping trip will be a one-of-a-kind adventure. But before you head out, check out our beach camping trip tips below!
-
Make sure beach camping is allowed
No matter what your inner explorer wants, you can’t just set up your tent or park your RV anywhere. Most beaches have rules dictating whether or not camping is allowed. Some allow camping but ban fun activities like bonfires and barbecues. But don’t fret! Many beaches have specialty campsites to make your beach camping trip safe. Whether you’re looking for an RV or traditional tent campsite, you should have plenty of options. It’s important to know which beaches have campsites before you decide where to stay.
-
Track the tides
Make sure you know you won’t get swept away by the waves at high tide! Most RV parks are set far enough back from the water you don’t need to worry about it. But if your beach allows camping right on the sand, do so with caution.
Familiarize yourself with the beach before you head out. At some beaches, the sand gets completely swallowed up by the ocean at high tide. Don’t make the mistake of pitching your tent too close to the water. You don’t want to wake up in a tent flooded with freezing cold water!
-
Stock up on water
On your beach camping trip, you’re going to spend every second of the day enjoying the sun. Chances are, you’ll be engaging in more physical activity than you would on an average day. From frisbee to beach volleyball to tossing around the football, the beach is a great place to work up a sweat. Even if you’re just laying on your towel, it’s easy to get dehydrated fast. Bring twice as much water as you think you’ll need. Having too much water is much better than running out and having to leave the beach for a trip to the store.
-
Bring the sunscreen
You don’t want to end your first day looking like a walking tomato. You won’t be in a great mood if you have a giant painful burn over every inch of your body. A bad sunburn can leave you huddling inside the tent or RV while everyone else is outside having fun. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming.
These last two tips are mostly for the tent campers. You’ll be exposed to the elements in your tent, so you should take every precaution to make sure you’ll be safe and comfortable.
-
Pack warm for the night
Unless you’re in the tropics, the wind blowing off the water means the beach can get very chilly at night. Check the nighttime temperature lows before you leave. Even if it’s blazing hot during the day, pack a blanket or sleeping bag, along with a warmer set of clothes. Though it may be inconvenient to bring those extra items along, you won’t regret it when the temperature drops and you’re nice and cozy in your tent.
-
Be prepared for rain
Sudden ocean storms are always a possibility, even during the driest months of summer. Don’t trust your weather forecast. Bring a rain tarp for your tent no matter what. You don’t want to get soaked in the middle of the night with no way of keeping dry.
