How to Winterize Your Boat
You’ve winterized your home and your car, but what about your boat?
Your recreational vehicle is a big investment, so it’s important to protect it during those colder months when it won’t get any use. Take these steps to winterize your boat and it’ll be ready and waiting when you’re ready to hit the water again next summer!
Winter boat storage
If possible, place your boat in dry storage during the winter to prevent damage to your hull. A climate-controlled storage area is best. If you do choose dry storage, keep in mind your engine may be at risk during sudden hard freezes.
Remove the battery
Disconnect your boat’s battery and store it in a dry, climate-controlled location. Make sure your battery is fully charged when you store it and that you maintain the water level all winter.
Flush the engine with fresh water
Doing this will clear out any dirt, salt, and other substances that can corrode your engine. How you flush your engine will depend on the type of engine you have, so check your owner’s manual for the correct method.
Add fuel stabilizer
Fuel can break down and clog your engine if left sitting for too long. Fill your tank to about 95% capacity, then add a fuel stabilizer. Follow the directions in your owner’s manual or on the stabilizer’s packaging to add the correct amount.
Clean the hull
Start by checking your boat’s hull for cracks and gelcoat blisters. Cracks can be signs of a bigger problem and should be checked out by a professional. Drain the water from any blisters and seal them with an epoxy-based filler.
Scrape away any barnacles which have become attached to the hull of your boat, then pressure wash to remove additional scum and grime. This may be a good time to inspect your boat’s paint and take care of any touch ups it needs. After cleaning, treat the hull with a boat wax to protect the surface.
Clean the interior
If you plan to store your boat for several months, it’s a good idea to give the interior a thorough cleaning. Clean all vinyl, carpets, and surfaces to prevent the buildup of mold and mildew.
